Summer: Five Minute Friday

I’m a little late this week, but I’m tagging in for this week’s Five Minute Friday link-up. Every week writers from all over the globe gather to write on a common theme. This week our prompt is Summer.

British summers are very different to back home in Ohio.

The temperatures are cool and the air is damp. Winds here are constant and each day we are teased by the chance of a shower or two. Most days I grab a cardigan or hat before heading out. I would compare a British summer to April/May in Ohio.

Don’t misunderstand–there are warmer days. There have been a couple of sunblock-worthy days here, but they are not consistent. Also, it’s no use planning your days according to the reports from local weathermen. No one has a clue how to predict rain on an island surrounded by sea. As my daughter would say, “You just go for it and hope for the best!”

We are headed to New Forest today, to the quaint British town of Lyndhurst. This is one of my favorite spots for a Cream Tea and so rain or shine, we will be venturing out to the horse meadows of the village and the cobbled streets of the town. I wouldn’t have to pack on the layers of warmer clothes back home, but while in England–best to be prepared.

Rain: Five Minute Friday

It’s Friday and I’m up early in order to write alongside my favorite linkup before work. Five Minute Friday is a group of writers and bloggers from all over the world who join together once a week to write on a common topic. The topic this week is rain. Below is my five minutes of uninterrupted writing on the topic.

The air is thick and beckoning the clouds to let loose. The ominous skies tempt us to believe that rain is on the way. Soon the bright orb of the sun breaks through and all signs of precipitation vanquish. Air has never felt this heavy. Come, rain, bring us relief!

This past week we lived in constant anticipation for rain. As the temperatures climbed, so did our desire to see the clouds break open. The weathermen even took our hopes captive as they promised rain. But the week is nearly over and not one drop has fallen in my little corner of the world. The grass withers outside my window and my allergies are acting up.

I’m hungry for relief. If the rain would fall (if even for a few minutes) maybe it would feel like September.

English Rain Jacket

Inevitably it’s been a cool and rainy stay thus far in England. With only a few downpours we’ve been graced with more of the drizzle type of rain. Not enough to change our plans, but enough to be quite annoying. For a while I’ve been in need of some nice rain gear. I purchased Sperry rain boots this spring, but held off on a jacket for my trip to England. I really wanted to buy an English style rain jacket.

I ended up finding a lightweight olive colored rain jacket at Primark for nine pounds (or roughly $15.) Primark is a store unlike anything we have in America. The shop has fashionable and affordable clothes and home decor. It’s one of my favorite shopping spots when I visit each year. I was drawn to this jacket because it folds into its pocket for an easy pack in the suitcase for my journey home.

This jacket has a cinch waist, large hood, thin lining, and front pockets. It isn’t meant for a cold rain, but rather for the warmer rains of the English summer. It’s trendy and performs its function well. Another successful Primark purchase for me!

Rain Obsessed

You know you live in Ohio when exactly two weeks after posting a Snow Boot wishlist you find yourself in need of rain gear. The real absence of snow this season persuaded me to forget about shopping for snow boots and instead focus on waterproofing my wardrobe. It’s been rainy and warm for the past three days here in central Ohio. It may be a spring tease, but I’ll take it. There’s nothing like opening the house up and spending time outdoors after a couple of months of being cooped inside.

These days of sixty degree temperatures have been tempting me. Even now as I take off my new Sperry rain boots (pictured above) which were entirely practical this morning I am preparing to take my daughter to the park which is defrosted and dried thanks to the sun and warm temps. I’m now lacing up my tennis shoes while trying to knock out a witty post about rain gear and I find myself being blinded by the rays of sunlight protruding through the windows.

Even if this nice weather is temporary it’s brought some hope that the warm months are to come. (Also, the groundhog has confirmed this in his pronouncement that Spring is right around the corner!)

What is this!?! Does the weather understand it is still February? I won’t be the one to remind it.

Here’s to a quick end to the cold and snowy season and an open armed embrace to Spring and the light showers it ensues. So grab an umbrella, a cute monogrammed rain jacket, and the always necessary rain boots and help me cheer on the impending start of Spring.
