A New Vitamin Journey

For too long I’ve dealt with the symptoms of an insufficient diet. Things like an achy gut, fatigue, and irritability have kept me from being able to truly enjoy life as it is meant to be. I’ve cut out dairy almost completely, and while it has definitely helped, I have noticed that lacking in those nutrients has contributed to other symptoms. For years, I have struggled to find a multivitamin that is tailored to my needs.

Enter Care/Of.

While scrolling on Instagram one day, I found this new(ish) company called Care/Of. It is a vitamin subcription company whose products are selected for you based on a short test. It takes five minutes to answer questions about your diet, lifestyle, and goals. The test is also free so if you are interested in your personal results try it out:

My results pointed toward a need for fish oil, probiotics, zinc, and a multivitamin with iron. Then the site provided me with information on all of these vitamins and gave me the opportunity to explore other products like protein powders, energy boosters, and merchandise.

Once I was happy with my order, I placed it and set up a recurring delivery schedule to ensure that I don’t run out at the end of the month. It is recommended to give it 2-3 months of daily intake before assessing the results. I will let you all know how I feel in a couple of months and whether or not Care/Of products are working for me.

So far, I can tell you that I love the fact that each day’s vitamins come in a sealed pack with my name and encouraging quote. The box is slim, cute, and biodegradable, which is a welcomed replacement to multiple bottles lined up on a counter or in a cupboard. I keep mine on my coffee counter and it is a cheerful addition to my morning routine.

If you are interested, take the test! There is no obligation, but once you see the results and understand the benefits of certain vitamins, I’m sure you will be intrigued like I was and place that first order.

This post includes affliate links. I may receive compensation or customer credit when you use my links to make purchases on the Care/Of website. All opinions are honest and my own.

Beef Roast (Paleo)

Many of you know that I am married to a British man. One meal that those British men love is a nice pot of roasted meat and potatoes. Roast dinners are a staple in England appearing on many household tables every Sunday evening and nearly every special occasion. If ever asked, “What should we have for dinner?” My husband almost always replies with “Roast Dinner!”

Since I have been restricting my diet to a Paleo/Caveman one there are many meals I am having to say farewell to, but luckily a beef roast doesn’t have to be one of them.

Currently, there is a lot of debate in the nutrition world about whether or not potatoes are allowable in the Paleo diet. I have done some reading and I have decided to be inclusive of the starchy vegetable myself, but if you have a problem with potatoes then you can always substitute them for sweet potatoes. For me, Paleo isn’t about recreating a caveman lifestyle, but about making sure I’m sticking to a diet rich in vegetables and meat. The Paleo diet is one that reduces sugar intake and removes all processed foods for the purpose of stripping the human diet down to its origins. Eating as many Paleo-friendly foods as possible will help your digestive tract, energy levels, and will also aide in weight loss.

Here is my personal recipe for a simple beef roast.

Ingredients

2 lbs beef steaks or chuck roast

3-4 russet potatoes (or sweet potatoes if you opt to avoid white potatoes)

2 cups fresh or frozen green beans

1 cup water

img_5133

Directions

  1. Preheat over to 350 degrees.
  2. Chop the potatoes, leaving the peels on, into 1 inch cubes.
  3. Place your meat into the bottom of a cast iron pot or roasting tin.
  4. Add potatoes to the top of the meat.
  5. Place green beans on top of the potatoes.
  6. Pour water over top mixture. Cover.
  7. Place in the oven for 1.5 hours. Make sure meat is cooked and vegetables are tender before serving.

It’s a foolproof Paleo recipe!

Sick and Aching in the Ameri Brit House

img_4326

One thing I can never seem to defend my family against is the gamut of germs that accompany the month of November. Every year at about this time, viruses take up residence in my home and as much as I try to prevent illnesses from running rampant, it still happens. For two weeks I’ve felt on the verge of infection. I’m lethargic and achy.

I’ve tried to combat these unwanted microscopic guests with essential oils, vitamins, exercise, and a natural diet. Yet, here I am at 6:00pm on a weekday, sipping on soup and ready to send off to bed.

Living in the Midwest has its downfalls. The sun escapes the sky shortly after work hours. My daylight is spent in a classroom, and I attribute most of my zapped energy to lack of natural vitamin D. Winter is upon us, and the need for a healthy diet and routine are imperative.

I’m really hoping my new Gluten-free/Paleo diet will help this year. I’ve read that the natural ingredients in a caveman diet (Paleo) will aide in the increase of energy and help fight contagious illnesses. Here’s to hoping and praying that God will use this new diet plan to help myself and my family during this critical time of the year.

Is anyone else feeling down with the winter blues already? How do you combat this weather and keep your family healthy?

Five Minute Friday: Journey

This week the topic for the Five Minute Friday link-up post is Journey. What is a link-up? Essentially a link-up is when you join other bloggers and write on a similar topic. You share your blog posts with one another and begin conversations via a host site. You can head over to Kate Motaung’s page to check out other entries from inspired bloggers. Here’s my five minutes of uninterrupted, unedited writing on this week’s topic:

journey-600x600

I’m on a journey to whole health. Last week I wrote about my decision to go gluten free for a month to see if I exhibit any noticeable results. Since then I’ve continued to abstain from gluten and have removed processed foods from my diet as well. I am currently reading and researching the Whole30 diet. That would involve narrowing my food choices down to meat, vegetables, fruit, and oils, but am not entirely committing to the Whole 30 diet until January as it is unwise to try anything that drastic over the holidays.

I’ve been pinning recipes and injecting more organic foods to my pantry and cooking menus. My husband has even been inspired and plans to join me in whatever dietary plan I land on. It’s no secret that I love to eat. I’ve hardly met a dish I didn’t like. So years of poor food choices and inherited genes have led me to a place where I am unhappy. I am unhappy with how I feel, what I eat, and how I look which is why I’m taking back control of my eating habits.

I’m on a journey to cleanse my body of the buildup of toxins. I’m on a journey to purge my mind of toxic thoughts and emotions. I’m on a journey to whole health that extends beyond what I choose to eat to include educated decisions about feeding my family and feeding my mind. As I go through this journey, I’ve been tracking my meals and reactions. After just a week and a half I’m already reporting feeling more full and energetic and less digestive tract discomfort.

I’m looking to start a social media group over the holiday season for others who are looking for relief from their symptoms. The goal of the group would be to share recipes and gain accountability in our whole health journeys. Be on the lookout for more information in the future about this group and my personal journey.

Five Minute Friday: Eat

This week the topic for the Five Minute Friday link-up post is Eat. What is a link-up? Essentially a link-up is when you join other bloggers and write on a similar topic. coffee-600x600

I’m new to this gluten-free thing.

After months of struggling with weight and digestive issues I’ve decided to give gluten-free eating a try. Over the past couple of years I’ve noticed some changes to my metabolism and eating habits and I’ve been unhappy with the way my body has been reacting to the food I’ve been putting into it. Auto-immune disorders that run in my family also factored into this decision.

Several people I know have been eating gluten-free for a wide range of reasons and it’s been recommended by so many of them that I give it a shot. I was reluctant at first because one of my favorite foods is bread. My second favorite food is cake. I put off trying a gluten-free diet out of convenience. However, after a weekend of feeling pretty crummy I decided to try gluten-free for one month and see if I notice any difference to the way I feel.

My mom and best friend have both experimented with gluten-free diets and have been successful. I’ve turned to them for advice on where to find food and meals. Since I launched this new diet on Monday I’ve realized that eating gluten-free isn’t as big of a hassle as I had thought. Sure, there are some sacrifices to be made, but gluten-free has become so mainstream that many restaurants and grocers offer items tailored for such diets.

I know that cutting gluten is a newer approach to treating digestive tract disorders, auto-immune disorders and other health conditions. Many of you have years of experience under your belt. Today I would love to hear from you. I’m seeking advice on where to shop, what to buy, and what to eat. I covet recipes and any information those of you knowledgeable in the gluten-free world.

Five Minute Friday: Park

I’ve been lucky enough to have the second half of this work week off due to my town’s annual festival, The Pumpkin Show. Every year it seems to come at just the right time. I’ve gotten into a good routine with school and I’m starting to get a bit tired of all the energy that goes into being a teacher and mom all while trying to keep on top of the housework, cooking, and the never ending mound of laundry. The temperatures have been changing on top of all of my demands, and for about two weeks I’ve felt the tickling of germs in my throat just waiting for the right opportunity to spread into a full blown cold. I’ve diffused Essential Oils nightly to stave off any symptoms, but the true remedy for the way I have been feeling is a short break. Thank you, Pumpkin Show!

On Wednesday I kicked my break off with a run at a local park. I’ve been going to a cardio and strength class that my aunt teaches and that group decided to avoid the town’s festivities and run at a park just outside of the city. I woke up reluctantly on my first day of break, but I was so glad that I did.

For class that morning, we ran over two miles. Every quarter of a mile we stopped and did a variation of jump jacks, lunges, push ups, and crunches.

It had been so long since I ran. Over the summer I battled a bit with allergies which kept me from running. Instead, I turned to another way of getting myself in shape. I started attending classes once a week at my aunt’s place and found myself getting stronger and stronger. I was still taking time to focus on me and my fitness, but in a way totally foreign to me. I think that’s why I loved it.

I’m so glad that even though I was tired and feeling a little run down that I decided to start my break with an early morning at the park. The cool air and slight humidity felt good. The scene was beautiful as the trees around me were changing colors. The vibrancy of the colors added a little pep to my step. It was a day that reminded me of my love for running and the great outdoors.

Five Minute Friday: Lift

This week the topic for the Five Minute Friday link-up post is Lift. What is a link-up? Essentially a link-up is when you join other bloggers and write on a similar topic. You share your blog posts with one another and begin conversations via a host site. You can head over to Kate Motaung’s page to check out other entries from inspired bloggers. Here’s my five minutes of uninterrupted, unedited writing on this week’s topic:

lift-600x600

Over the course of the summer I have struggled with some serious allergy complications. I’ve seen several doctors, been prescribed countless medications, and even limited my exposure to the outdoors. I’m not 100% yet, but I’m much better than I was in May. It was during this season of my life, however, that I took the opportunity to try something new.

I’ve always been a runner. My exercise of choice has always involved lacing up a pair of running shoes and taking to the streets. This spring I even ran a Quarter Marathon (my first race since giving birth in 2012.) The trouble with running and allergies is that they don’t go well together. As my allergies were worsening this summer I went on a few runs where I had to stop because I couldn’t breath. It had become difficult to take deep breaths which is something imperative for distance running.

With the coercing of one of my doctors I decided to step away from running for a bit. I wasn’t banned from all exercise, but running was one of the worst things to participate in while nursing a chest infection and being prescribed daily albuterol.

At the time, I was in pretty decent shape. I could have just said, “Forget exercise,” and slipped back into one of my funks where I stop taking care of myself physically, but instead I decided to try a new method of exercise. My friend and I started using the app, SworkIt. This app helped me to build some strength in my arms, legs, and core without using any type of equipment. I highly recommend it because I saw results very quickly after using this daily.

In the beginning of the summer I was in England. While there I took part in a weekly Hoola Hoop Fitness class with my mother-in-law. Being a part of a fitness class for the first time inspired me to find a class when I returned to the states. I loved the positivity of working out with other people. As a runner I was a lone wolf. Something about being able to look across the room and share a look of agony with someone else helped to get me through each workout. There were other people in the room keeping me accountable and feeling the same pain as me.

My Aunt Andrea is an exercise enthusiast. She has been that way as long as I can remember. When I was growing up I used to go to her Jazzercise classes and babysit the children whose mothers were working out. She has since quit the Jazzercise scene, but has opened her own fitness group in my hometown. She is the co-owner of the group. They rent an old church basement and each day one of the three teachers hosts an evening class.

About a month ago I decided to give her class a try. My first class was a cardio class. It was so much fun. Andrea pushed me in new ways that I’ve never been pushed before. Sure, I can go out an run ten miles, but some of her cardio routines seemed harder than a long distance run.

Next, I tried a strength class. And I lifted handheld weights for the FIRST TIME! Someone should have told me that lifting is addicting. I never understood the Crossfit Movement until I felt the ache of having lifted. Now I want that every day!

I’m excited that I’ve found a new way to exercise and tone my body. Each day my allergies are getting better and I’m able to do more and more. I do plan to reintroduce running into my routine, however, I am excited to be able to switch between multiple workouts.

For those of you who are local readers and may want some information on Andrea’s class send me a comment or email and I will gladly pass it on!

Hoola Fit

One of my favorite parts of this summer’s stay in England has been my weekly Hoola Fit class with my Mother-in-Law. She has been taking the class since January so she has been kicking my butt. My first week was a bit rough, but each week I’ve progressed. I was bound and determined after a sixty year old woman out-hula’d me that I would work on my skills.

It may not seem that difficult, but one hour of continuous hula and cardio is one heck of a workout. At the end of each class I’m winded, sore, and ready for the five minute yoga cool down.

Once I thought I was doing well and catching on the instructor started having me throw in moves with the arms and legs, then pivots, and finally gallops all while keeping the hula hoop revolving around my core. My first week I spent much of the class just chasing my hoop, but with each week I’ve grown stronger.

I love the simplicity of this aerobic workout. All you need is a hoop and some good workout music!

The New Fitbit Alta

I’ve been an avid Fitbit user for two years. In 2014 I received a Fitbit Flex for my 24th birthday. For the past 730 days I’ve sported that thing almost every day. Challenging myself to hit daily and weekly goals has made using a Fitbit an enjoyable experience. Just the simple act of tracking fitness has given me the extra motivation it takes to maintain a healthy lifestyle. For example, where before I may have parked my car closest to the door to a shop I’ve now gotten into the habit of adding a bit of a walk whenever I can. Seeing my steps add up has given me a competitive spirit about working out and getting healthy. All of the tracking is made easy through Bluetooth syncing with the Fitbit App for my phone. The interface is easy to use and can be customized based on your personal fitness goals. Additionally I enjoy competing with friends and fellow Fitbit wearers through the App.

IMG_2860

For two years the Flex has served me well. I never had any trouble with charging, synching, or troubleshooting. It has been a faithful little device. However, this year Fitbit released a new model the Alta. And for my 26th birthday I decided to upgrade my workout device and I am now the proud owner of an Alta.

IMG_2859

Some major differences between the Flex and the Alta:

  1. The display screen-the old Flex model I had did not possess a display screen. Progress toward goals was displayed via dots which appeared when the device was tapped. The Alta screen displays a clock, step progress, battery life, and many other selected statistics. This is really nice because I can have a quick look at exactly how much physical activity I’ve completed each day.
  2. Auto detection– the new Alta recognizes the movements of your wrist and knows when you are looking at it. Each time you turn your wrist the clock or statistics automatically appear. The only tapping you must do with the device is the scroll between different stats (i.e. steps, calories, active minutes, etc.)
  3. Accessories– The Fitbit bands are all designed to be worn as an attractive accessory, however, the Alta has a little more flair to it. Not only do the bands come in multiple colors, but they come in multiple materials as well. Currently there are plastic, leather, and stainless steel bands for the Alta. They are all so cute!

If you have any questions about the Fitbit products I’ve reviewed please comment below and I will do my best to reply accordingly.

Five Apps For Your Whole Health

The end of the school year is near. There is a light at the tunnel, but I’m also approaching what we refer to in the teaching world as “crunch time.” It’s time to wrap up all of the loose ends, prepare for exams, assign final projects, and grade all of those things. I always get to this point that I want to kick myself for making so many due dates in the last days. I know from experience that the next few weeks are going to be rough on me. I will be spending my entire day for the next nine days doing what it takes to walk out of my classroom by the final bell on May 25th never to return again (until August, that is.) Summer is in sight, but currently my view is blocked by all of the to-dos.

Over the past couple of months I’ve been on a bit of a health kick. The beautiful weather coupled with my passion for running have helped to fuel my workouts and eating habits. One thing that has challenged my desire to get in shape has been time. I prefer to run long distances and strength train a few times a week. Having a full time job, a family to care for, and a writing hobby has made it a little tricky to find time to do everything I want in a day. The 21st century is a faster paced lifestyle than ever before and although we are making huge progress as humanity we are oftentimes neglecting the importance of balancing our individual health.

This Sunday I sat down with my Sunday Basket and organized my week being sure to schedule my workouts into my calendar as well. They are important enough to me to warrant planning ahead. A big part of wanting to focus on my health stems from my want to be happy. If you’ve ever had a kick-butt workout you know what I mean. It may nearly kill you, but the endorphins released in the workout help to make you a happier person overall. But our happiness isn’t dependent on physical fitness. In order to live a happy and fulfilled life we have to also focus on the other two parts of our health.

I’m learning a lot about what it means to focus on my whole self when it comes to health. When it comes to health there are many facets. Health includes the mind, body, and soul. If one of those parts of your health is lacking it throws your life off balance. There is a constant struggle happening for your whole health.

It is important to keep your mind sharp and challenged. Sometimes that means reading a book, researching an interest, taking part in an intellectually stimulating conversation, or anything else that stretches you beyond what you already know and leads you to experience something new.

Your body is the part that most focus on when they think about health, because it is the easiest one to see or control. As a minimum you should spend thirty minutes a day doing something active be that running, walking, lifting, cycling, climbing, swimming, etc. We were built to have regular fitness in our lives.

Lastly, the most neglected part of your being is your soul. How often do you invest time and energy into your soul? For some, this is a more regular occurrence than others. If I haven’t taken time for myself to read something inspiring, pray, interact in a community of people with similar beliefs then I feel off balance in every other area of my life. In a busy lifestyle this is the first aspect to get neglected, but it is also one of the most important to happiness.

Living in the 21st century can be a challenge, but it also has its perks. Lately, I’ve found myself turning to some apps for help in this balancing act. Below are five apps that have helped me in my own struggles to maintain the health of the whole me.

Tk5cdz9f

Fitbit is one of my favorite apps. If you own a fitbit you know what I’m talking about. I love the daily challenges and the progress tracking the fitbit provides. Another feature I enjoy is being able to compete with friends via the app. Sometimes we all need a little extra motivation to get out and moving and fitbit helps to provide that through its goal-centered rewards and community of other users.

unnamed (3).png

Runkeeper goes beyond just tracking steps (like fitbit) and tracks my actual activity. Runkeeper is compatible with Fitbit. This is a recent download, but I’m really liking my introduction to its services. Some things that Runkeeper can do that Fitbit cannot are: track and save routes, provide personal records for activity, interval and split times, vocal prompts, if you are willing to pay a bit of cash they provide training programs specific to your goals. So far, I’ve basically used this app as an online running diary which allows me to track progress.

f9e61c52bcfe42e483e64e33c8a33e2905f17604

Sworkit is perfect for the workout enthusiast on the go. This app provides exercises for various regions of the body that require no equipment. To begin each workout you select the number of minutes you would like to workout and a target part of the body then it will go through several thirty-second exercises aimed at building strength in those areas with no weights or gym necessary. I’ve started using Sworkit after school in another teacher’s classroom before we go on runs. It kicks my butt every time and I love it.

L3ciji9R_400x400.png

She Reads Truth is one of my apps geared toward the health of my soul. I’ve used this app regularly for over a year. Using this app you have access to dozens of Bible Studies written by women and aimed at getting you into The Word on a daily basis. Most of the studies are free, but some cost a couple of bucks. It takes about ten minutes to complete a devotion on this site, but it is so worth the growth you will make in scripture knowledge and your outlook at as a woman.

 download (7)

Thrive Moms is a brand new app. Thrive Moms has been an online community for a few years, but they have only recently crossed over into the app store. Similar to She Reads Truth, this app provides short bible studies geared toward mothers of young children. Currently, I’m reading through a study that focuses on the stress of motherhood and how to rely on God through every challenge and not take yourself so seriously. The writers of this app really understand what it’s like to be a mother and all of the beauty, chaos, and mess attached to it. This app also provides information about local mother groups, access to prayer request submissions, and retreat material for girls’ nights.

I’m nowhere near achieving the perfect balance of my mind, body, and soul, but if we are all honest none of us really are. I hope these app resources help you feel a little more on top of it like I do. Words of wisdom: Love what you do and don’t be too hard on yourself!

Let me know if there are any other apps that you find to be particularly helpful in the building up of your mind, body, and soul.

Blessings in your pursuit of a wholesome you!
