A New Vitamin Journey

For too long I’ve dealt with the symptoms of an insufficient diet. Things like an achy gut, fatigue, and irritability have kept me from being able to truly enjoy life as it is meant to be. I’ve cut out dairy almost completely, and while it has definitely helped, I have noticed that lacking in those nutrients has contributed to other symptoms. For years, I have struggled to find a multivitamin that is tailored to my needs.

Enter Care/Of.

While scrolling on Instagram one day, I found this new(ish) company called Care/Of. It is a vitamin subcription company whose products are selected for you based on a short test. It takes five minutes to answer questions about your diet, lifestyle, and goals. The test is also free so if you are interested in your personal results try it out:

My results pointed toward a need for fish oil, probiotics, zinc, and a multivitamin with iron. Then the site provided me with information on all of these vitamins and gave me the opportunity to explore other products like protein powders, energy boosters, and merchandise.

Once I was happy with my order, I placed it and set up a recurring delivery schedule to ensure that I don’t run out at the end of the month. It is recommended to give it 2-3 months of daily intake before assessing the results. I will let you all know how I feel in a couple of months and whether or not Care/Of products are working for me.

So far, I can tell you that I love the fact that each day’s vitamins come in a sealed pack with my name and encouraging quote. The box is slim, cute, and biodegradable, which is a welcomed replacement to multiple bottles lined up on a counter or in a cupboard. I keep mine on my coffee counter and it is a cheerful addition to my morning routine.

If you are interested, take the test! There is no obligation, but once you see the results and understand the benefits of certain vitamins, I’m sure you will be intrigued like I was and place that first order.

This post includes affliate links. I may receive compensation or customer credit when you use my links to make purchases on the Care/Of website. All opinions are honest and my own.

February 2022 Bullet Journal Setup

During the first month of 2022, I re-established my bullet journal habits. I like to use my journal to reflect on and plan out my life. The journals that I have filled over the years have served as memory books, and I have enjoyed the creative outlet that they have provided as well. I am influenced by many different bullet journalers on Youtube as well as my own Pinterest board. Be sure to check out the supply list at the end of the post if you are interested in what I used to create this month’s pages.

January Review

Photos of my new English degree, Date Night, and my daughters after Covid.

My January review page contains my Top 3 photos from the month. I used my Sprocket to print directly from my phone onto sticker photo paper. This was also the month where I launched my brand and so I included both the front and back of my new business cards. Additionally, I enjoy keeping a list of things that I am currently reading, watching, listening to and loving. For all of the rest of my spreads from last month, check out my January 2022 Bullet Journal Setup post.

Cover Page

Harry Potter's glasses and the HP logo. February 2022.

My February theme is Harry Potter. This is one that I have wanted to do for many months and I was inspired by photos from my Bullet Journal board on Pinterest. My lettering was in a serif font that mimics the style of the official Harry Potter logo.

Calendar

February 2022 calendar hand drawn with the sign of the horcrux and Griffyndor colors.

The calendar for February was created using a traditional 5×5 box setup. Colors were selected to correspond with the monthly theme and in the same font used throughout these pages as well. The minimalist style of adding color to just one side of the elements was used for shading in letters as well as on the wand below the title.

Fitness and Diet Tracker

Inspired by the Marauder’s Map, I created a way to record my exercise and diet journey. These pages are a great place to track my progress toward my health goals. This is a functional spread, and probably my favorite this month.

Weekly Spread

As usual, I used my weekly spread which is modified from the Plant Based Bride’s Rolling Weekly spread. The colors used on this page align with the Gryffindor house colors. I also drew a picture of the Sorting Hat, and I plan to carry on the Harry Potter theme with the house colors for the remaining weeks of the month.

This month, I doodled a little more than usual. Whenever my illustrations become the focus, I tend to limit my color scheme and supplies so that I do not get overwhelmed. The minimalist coloring style also helps to save time while also keeping up a uniform look throughout all of the spreads. The supplies I used in this setup include:

Amanda Rach Lee A5 dotted notebook

Crayola Supertip Markers

Tombow Fudenoske pen in black

Sprocket

If you have any ideas for a March theme I would love for you to leave a comment. I would like to do something a little less on the illustration side in order to balance out this month’s doodle-heavy theme. Happy February!

My Echelon/Pelaton Journey

At the start of the year, my husband and I were looking for no excuses for skipping our time at the gym. We wanted to find a way to ensure our daily workouts happened without the weather or kids’ schedules keeping us from taking care of our own bodies. At an after-Christmas sale we decided to invest in an Echelon Connect Sport bike.

We were drawn to the sleek design and the compatibility to use alongside other apps or programs. This bike had most of the features of the popular Pelaton bikes, but was a fraction of the cost. A couple thousand dollars for a stationary bike just didn’t fit into our travel-centric family budget so Echelon met all of our needs while also fitting into the financial boundaries we built around our family’s goals.

The bike now sits in our bedroom right next to the bed. To prevent damage to our new bedroom carpet we also purchased workout flooring on Amazon. My husband chose to place the bike in our room because there is truly NO EXCUSE not to hop on every day. Even twenty minutes of solid riding can burn a couple hundred calories.

Echelon has their own app with workouts, but it is more expensive than the popular Pelaton App. (They are running a special right now for two months of free app membership.)

I highly recommend. (No, I’m not getting paid for saying that!)

The Echelon bike is built in such a similar fashion as the Pelaton that we are able to complete the app’s workouts while riding our bike. The only thing we are unable to do without the Pelaton bike is join the Leaderboards. Otherwise, we are able to place the workouts on our devices (television, phone, or iPad) and go!

I track my rides using Strava. This is the app I use for my outdoor rides and other workouts too because it tracks my progress and is a digital workout journal. If you use Strava, add me!

I have done ten rides now and I wanted to share my Echelon/Pelaton beginner update:

Rides: 10 since January 10, 2022

Miles: 61 miles

Longest Ride: 8.09 miles/30:52

Time on bike: 4 hours

Favorite ride: 20 minute Groove Ride (Cody Rigsby choreography ride)

Favorite instructor: Cody Rigsby

I would love to hear from other Echelon or Pelaton riders. Also, I am looking to build my Strava community to help encourage me to be accountable for my rides to someone other than just myself.

One more thing, if you have used the Pelaton app, what is your favorite ride? I am really looking for some challenging, fun, and motivational rides.

PiYo Update (Week Off)

This week I took it easy and did Beachbody PiYo every couple of days. Because of the jetlag I was off balance and exhausted so I didn’t do as much as I have in prior weeks. I will be jumping back into the routine this week and restarting at Week 4. Here is a look at the plan:

MondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFridaySaturday Sunday
15 minutes cardio
+
Sweat
CoreBuns15 minutes cardio
+
Drench
RestStrength IntervalsSweat

In addition to working out I am trying to drink more water. I have purchased a HydroJug to help me track my water intake and to make sure I am doing better. Naturally, I am not someone who drinks water regularly so my hope is that I get serious on this health journey and my HydroJug is a tool to help me reach my hydration goals. I will post more about my HydroJug and progress in the future!

PiYo Week 4 Recap

(This is a non affiliate post and based solely on my personal experience using the Beachbody PiYo program developed by Chalene Johnson. Results may vary.)

Things stepped up this week in my PiYo program. I started a few new workouts that were brand new to me and pushed me to new limits. I really noticed changes in my strength, flexibility and the way clothes fit especially in my core and thighs.

I’m still in England and trying to fit workouts around our very busy schedule during the trip. I missed ONE day of PiYo this week and am proud of that accomplishment. Each day has been packed full and so even on the day I missed I logged 18,000 steps. The pedestrian lifestyle of England is really enhancing my workouts which is great because I’m not able to perfect the PiYo diet while abroad (although I am really trying!)

I started this program with very little flexibility. I was a distance runner in my younger days which is horrible for flexibility training. It takes me a little longer to work up to some of the poses because of that, but this week I was able to do more and see some payoff because of my consistency. Part of the appeal of PiYo for me is the low impact movements and the ability to customize poses based on your needs. Earlier in the program I was more apt to modify the poses, but I can complete and entire regiment without modifications now which proves that things are going well.

Here’s a look at a flexibility feat from this week:

In this pose, the leg on the floor should be slightly bent to allow for a crouching push up when I fold at the hips.

Some observations from Week 4:

-Some of the poses that were originally really difficult are easier than before.

-I am getting better at holding tension poses for longer and keeping my feet flexed whenever my legs are in the air.

-I did a set of 10 regular push-ups for the first time EVER!

-Downward Dog can be a resting pose.

-I need to honor my RIGHT NOW and not worry so much about missing a workout…and then GO HARD on the days when I’m able to work out.

You can check out posts from previous weeks below:

Week One

Week Two

Week Three

This week things continue to step-up and poses and tension get more intense. I’ve previewed the days that lie ahead and I anticipate some sore buns and legs coupled with sculpted muscles and core. I can’t wait to continue to share my progress with you!

Five Minute Friday: Park

This week the topic for the Five Minute Friday link-up post is Park. What is a link-up? Essentially a link-up is when you join other bloggers and write on a similar topic. You share your blog posts with one another and begin conversations via a host site. You can head over to Kate Motaung’s page to check out other entries from inspired bloggers. Here’s my five minutes of uninterrupted, unedited writing on this week’s topic:

jessica-clark-600x600

I’ve been lucky enough to have the second half of this work week off due to my town’s annual festival, The Pumpkin Show. Every year it seems to come at just the right time. I’ve gotten into a good routine with school and I’m starting to get a bit tired of all the energy that goes into being a teacher and mom all while trying to keep on top of the housework, cooking, and the never ending mound of laundry. The temperatures have been changing on top of all of my demands, and for about two weeks I’ve felt the tickling of germs in my throat just waiting for the right opportunity to spread into a full blown cold. I’ve diffused Essential Oils nightly to stave off any symptoms, but the true remedy for the way I have been feeling is a short break. Thank you, Pumpkin Show!

On Wednesday I kicked my break off with a run at a local park. I’ve been going to a cardio and strength class that my aunt teaches and that group decided to avoid the town’s festivities and run at a park just outside of the city. I woke up reluctantly on my first day of break, but I was so glad that I did.

For class that morning, we ran over two miles. Every quarter of a mile we stopped and did a variation of jump jacks, lunges, push ups, and crunches.

It had been so long since I ran. Over the summer I battled a bit with allergies which kept me from running. Instead, I turned to another way of getting myself in shape. I started attending classes once a week at my aunt’s place and found myself getting stronger and stronger. I was still taking time to focus on me and my fitness, but in a way totally foreign to me. I think that’s why I loved it.

I’m so glad that even though I was tired and feeling a little run down that I decided to start my break with an early morning at the park. The cool air and slight humidity felt good. The scene was beautiful as the trees around me were changing colors. The vibrancy of the colors added a little pep to my step. It was a day that reminded me of my love for running and the great outdoors.

Five Minute Friday: Lift

This week the topic for the Five Minute Friday link-up post is Lift. What is a link-up? Essentially a link-up is when you join other bloggers and write on a similar topic. You share your blog posts with one another and begin conversations via a host site. You can head over to Kate Motaung’s page to check out other entries from inspired bloggers. Here’s my five minutes of uninterrupted, unedited writing on this week’s topic:

lift-600x600

Over the course of the summer I have struggled with some serious allergy complications. I’ve seen several doctors, been prescribed countless medications, and even limited my exposure to the outdoors. I’m not 100% yet, but I’m much better than I was in May. It was during this season of my life, however, that I took the opportunity to try something new.

I’ve always been a runner. My exercise of choice has always involved lacing up a pair of running shoes and taking to the streets. This spring I even ran a Quarter Marathon (my first race since giving birth in 2012.) The trouble with running and allergies is that they don’t go well together. As my allergies were worsening this summer I went on a few runs where I had to stop because I couldn’t breath. It had become difficult to take deep breaths which is something imperative for distance running.

With the coercing of one of my doctors I decided to step away from running for a bit. I wasn’t banned from all exercise, but running was one of the worst things to participate in while nursing a chest infection and being prescribed daily albuterol.

At the time, I was in pretty decent shape. I could have just said, “Forget exercise,” and slipped back into one of my funks where I stop taking care of myself physically, but instead I decided to try a new method of exercise. My friend and I started using the app, SworkIt. This app helped me to build some strength in my arms, legs, and core without using any type of equipment. I highly recommend it because I saw results very quickly after using this daily.

In the beginning of the summer I was in England. While there I took part in a weekly Hoola Hoop Fitness class with my mother-in-law. Being a part of a fitness class for the first time inspired me to find a class when I returned to the states. I loved the positivity of working out with other people. As a runner I was a lone wolf. Something about being able to look across the room and share a look of agony with someone else helped to get me through each workout. There were other people in the room keeping me accountable and feeling the same pain as me.

My Aunt Andrea is an exercise enthusiast. She has been that way as long as I can remember. When I was growing up I used to go to her Jazzercise classes and babysit the children whose mothers were working out. She has since quit the Jazzercise scene, but has opened her own fitness group in my hometown. She is the co-owner of the group. They rent an old church basement and each day one of the three teachers hosts an evening class.

About a month ago I decided to give her class a try. My first class was a cardio class. It was so much fun. Andrea pushed me in new ways that I’ve never been pushed before. Sure, I can go out an run ten miles, but some of her cardio routines seemed harder than a long distance run.

Next, I tried a strength class. And I lifted handheld weights for the FIRST TIME! Someone should have told me that lifting is addicting. I never understood the Crossfit Movement until I felt the ache of having lifted. Now I want that every day!

I’m excited that I’ve found a new way to exercise and tone my body. Each day my allergies are getting better and I’m able to do more and more. I do plan to reintroduce running into my routine, however, I am excited to be able to switch between multiple workouts.

For those of you who are local readers and may want some information on Andrea’s class send me a comment or email and I will gladly pass it on!

Hoola Fit

One of my favorite parts of this summer’s stay in England has been my weekly Hoola Fit class with my Mother-in-Law. She has been taking the class since January so she has been kicking my butt. My first week was a bit rough, but each week I’ve progressed. I was bound and determined after a sixty year old woman out-hula’d me that I would work on my skills.

It may not seem that difficult, but one hour of continuous hula and cardio is one heck of a workout. At the end of each class I’m winded, sore, and ready for the five minute yoga cool down.

Once I thought I was doing well and catching on the instructor started having me throw in moves with the arms and legs, then pivots, and finally gallops all while keeping the hula hoop revolving around my core. My first week I spent much of the class just chasing my hoop, but with each week I’ve grown stronger.

I love the simplicity of this aerobic workout. All you need is a hoop and some good workout music!

The New Fitbit Alta

I’ve been an avid Fitbit user for two years. In 2014 I received a Fitbit Flex for my 24th birthday. For the past 730 days I’ve sported that thing almost every day. Challenging myself to hit daily and weekly goals has made using a Fitbit an enjoyable experience. Just the simple act of tracking fitness has given me the extra motivation it takes to maintain a healthy lifestyle. For example, where before I may have parked my car closest to the door to a shop I’ve now gotten into the habit of adding a bit of a walk whenever I can. Seeing my steps add up has given me a competitive spirit about working out and getting healthy. All of the tracking is made easy through Bluetooth syncing with the Fitbit App for my phone. The interface is easy to use and can be customized based on your personal fitness goals. Additionally I enjoy competing with friends and fellow Fitbit wearers through the App.

IMG_2860

For two years the Flex has served me well. I never had any trouble with charging, synching, or troubleshooting. It has been a faithful little device. However, this year Fitbit released a new model the Alta. And for my 26th birthday I decided to upgrade my workout device and I am now the proud owner of an Alta.

IMG_2859

Some major differences between the Flex and the Alta:

  1. The display screen-the old Flex model I had did not possess a display screen. Progress toward goals was displayed via dots which appeared when the device was tapped. The Alta screen displays a clock, step progress, battery life, and many other selected statistics. This is really nice because I can have a quick look at exactly how much physical activity I’ve completed each day.
  2. Auto detection– the new Alta recognizes the movements of your wrist and knows when you are looking at it. Each time you turn your wrist the clock or statistics automatically appear. The only tapping you must do with the device is the scroll between different stats (i.e. steps, calories, active minutes, etc.)
  3. Accessories– The Fitbit bands are all designed to be worn as an attractive accessory, however, the Alta has a little more flair to it. Not only do the bands come in multiple colors, but they come in multiple materials as well. Currently there are plastic, leather, and stainless steel bands for the Alta. They are all so cute!

If you have any questions about the Fitbit products I’ve reviewed please comment below and I will do my best to reply accordingly.

What product(s) do you use to stay motivated?

Summer Bucket List 2016

The school year has officially come to a close. Each year I’m always astounded by how quickly things wrap up. It seems like only a few days ago that I was trying to learn the names of each of my one hundred sixty students, and now they are on to the tenth grade. 2015-2016 was a fantastic school year for me. I utilized more technology, taught my first honors course, met an author, and built a curriculum map for my courses. Yesterday during the annual kick-ball tournaments I found myself reminiscing about the school year and being thankful for such a great group of students and a job that I enjoy so much.

This morning I finalized grades and packed away my classroom for its summer hibernation. I turned my key for the last time as a fifth year teacher and I welcomed summer 2016. Now I’m ready to embrace family time, sunshine, and all of our travel plans. Here’s a look at some things I’m hoping to accomplish this summer:

1. Travel to Chicago and England

In a couple of weeks we will begin our annual travels to England to visit my husband’s friends and family. This year we are going to drive to Chicago, Illinois to catch our flight. There are a couple of reasons why we chose to depart from Chicago. First, it allowed us to save a couple hundred bucks per ticket to fly from O’Hare as opposed to Columbus. Second, the book that I wrote last year is set in Chicago. I still need to add thousand words or so to the manuscript so I plan to do some research and writing while in Chicago. We will be spending four days in the city and we are still looking for things to fill our itinerary. If you have suggestions, please comment!

Our English adventure this summer will be a month long holiday. Most of our time will be spent in my husband’s hometown of Eastleigh, but we will also be heading to other locations throughout the country. We are so excited to get to England–Costa, a hot mocha better be waiting for me!

IMG_1183

2. Finish Reading a Book Every Other Week

The pace of the school year makes it really hard to put a significant dent in my 24 Book Challenge. I hope to get caught up with where I should be in the challenge by the end of the summer. I may even be able to finish the challenge by August depending on the amount of free time I am afforded.

Book Challenge 2016

3. Wrap Up My Manuscript For My First Book

I finished writing my first book over Christmas break. Since wrapping up that initial draft I’ve realized I’m a couple thousand words short of what many publishers prefer for the genre. I plan to use my extra time in the summer to match the word requirements through research in Chicago, added dialogue, and better execution of major plot points. I’ll keep you updated along the way. I even plan to reach out to all of my blog readers for title, cover, and publisher suggestions.

FullSizeRender (17)

4. Picnic At Several Metro Parks

Once my awful allergy flare up clears I am excited to visit several Columbus Metro Parks with friends and family. This will start tomorrow as we have made dinner plans with church friends at the newest Metro Park in the area. Columbus has a wonderful parks system that I will be taking advantage of regularly during these summer months.

IMG_1491

5. Run On Average 20 Miles Per Week

I’m very excited to get back into running shape. Excluding the past few days (since I’ve been battling some infections stemming from allergies) I’ve been able to get back into shape fairly easily. I would like to see myself average twenty miles per week in running throughout the summer. I’m especially excited to run frequently while in England–that’s never happened before! It would also be cool to run a 5k or two this summer. My ultimate goal is to run the Columbus Marathon (half) in October so that will require keeping myself in shape throughout the summer.

As you look forward to the summer is there anything that you are particularly excited about? Share your goals and plans in the comments 🙂
